'Under the Big Black Sun' is a limited series of large-scale assemblage works by Cody Bayne that extends the conceptual terrain of Disparate Renewal while engaging the graphic intensity of Abstract Expressionism, particularly Robert Motherwell. Built from harvested urban materials—torn posters, paint fragments, tape, street-worn residue, and cement—the works investigate the rupture of the picture plane through bold mostly black interruptions that function as both object and void. Echoing the black afterimages formed by looking into harsh light, these forms suggest a tear in the surface—an opening that implies depth, revelation, or nothing at all.
